Walsall player ratings: One 8 and four 7s in Swindon draw

George Bennett provides his Walsall player ratings from their 1-1 draw against Swindon Town at the County Ground.

Jed Ward

A tad hesitant to deal with the loose ball for the first goal, but produced an excellent save to repel Anthony Munda’s deflected shot.

Responded: 6

Declan Skura

Started at right-back and improved after the break when he switched to centre-back, as Walsall looked a lot more solid at the back.

Versatile: 6

Ryan Leak

Retained his place in the defence, but was replaced at half-time for tactical reasons, as Walsall improved there afterwards.

Withdrawn: 5

James Connolly

Gifted Mitch Clark an opportunity with a sloppy cross-field pass, but settled into the contest and significantly improved after the break.

Slow-burner: 6

Mason Hancock

Hesitant for the Swindon opener, but otherwise looked good. His half-volley that was saved ultimately led to Tai Sodje’s equaliser.

Good: 6

Sven Sprangler

Looked back to his best after a couple of tricky games and swept up on a number of occasions to prevent potentially dangerous attacks.

Better: 7

Isaac Moore

Started slowly but gradually improved and covered plenty of ground in the process before making way midway into the second half.

Mixed: 6

Courtney Clarke

Recalled to the starting line-up and impressed. Never tired of taking players on and caught the eye with a series of mazy runs.

Dangerous: 7

Tai Sodje

Had the best Walsall chance of the first half when he half-volley was saved, before scoring the equaliser with his third goal in a week.

Key: 8

Reece Smith

The brightest Walsall performer in the first 45. Created a couple of openings with his endeavour and had a chance saved at 1-1.

Bright: 7

Aaron Pressley

Failed to clear convincingly for the Robins’ opener, but improved in the second half and had a goal ruled out despite it clearly crossing the line.

Grew: 7

Substitutes

Elicha Ahui

Came on at the start of the second half and produced a strong performance to help Walsall turn the tide.

Strong: 6

Charlie Crew

Very tidy on the ball and was forward-thinking with his distribution.

Tidy: 6

Other subs: Lewis Simper (for Clarke, 81); James Furlong (Hancock, 81); Andy Dallas (for Sodje, 85)

Not used: Wooster, Adomah.
