Walsall defender Elicha Ahui returns to training after 10-month absence

Ahui has not featured for Walsall since joining them in January 2025.

Darren Byfield has revealed that Walsall defender Elicha Ahui is back in training after a 10-month absence because of an ACL injury.

Ahui joined Walsall during the 2025 January transfer window but was immediately loaned back to fellow-Trivela owned outfit Drogheda United.

He suffered the injury midway into the 2025 League of Ireland campaign in June last year and has not featured since.

The 22-year-old has been completing his rehabilitation with Walsall and has been welcomed back to first team training for the first time.

“Elicha is training which is really good and I’ve been impressed with him,” interim head coach Byfield.

“He’s been good in training but obviously it’s different because we don’t get to see him in matches.

“But what I’ve seen in the training games and sessions, there’s something there.

“I don’t know what’s happening with him but all I can say is that there is positive feedback for how he has performed from me.”

Future remains unresolved

at the end of 2025/26 season

Expiring: Priestley Farquharson, Rico Browne, Aden Flint, Evan Weir, Alfie Chang, Brandon Comley, Charlie Lakin, Jamie Jellis, Dylan Thomas, Albert Adomah, Jamille Matt and Josh Gordon (currently on at Barrow).

Option Year: Elicha Ahui

Ahui penned an 18-month deal with Walsall upon signing, which is due to expire this summer, although the club hold the option of triggering a one-year extension.

Byfield was unable to provide clarity on Ahui’s - with contract negotiations currently out of his hands.

“That’s out of my hands. I’ve not discussed anything to do with recruitment because I don’t know what’s going on with myself,” he explained.

“At the minute, that’s above my head. So I just leave that to those guys [on the board] and try to win games of football.”

Right-back Ahui made 49 appearances in all competitions across three separate spells at Drogheda - scoring three goals.

He has also had spells at Peterborough Sports and Ayr United - in addition to making a solitary appearance for Lincoln City - where he started his career.
