Walsall debrief: Darren Byfield's rousing audition, wingers and Aden Flint's response

Walsall earned a creditable goalless draw against third-placed Cambridge United at Bescot in Darren Byfield's second game in interim charge.

Byfield - who is reportedly to set to take on the job until the end of the season - lifted Walsall to within two points of the League Two play-off places with eight games to go.

Although Walsall remain winless at WS1 in eight games, they did avoid setting an unwanted record of five successive home defeats for the first time in the Bescot era.

Here are the biggest talking points from the draw...

Byfield's rousing audition

Two games, four points, two clean sheets. Darren Byfield has instilled Walsall with defensive solidity - while helping them rediscovering their attacking grove - even if they didn't find the net on Tuesday.

There has been a refreshing difference in the nature of performances during Byfield's brief tenure as interim assistant.

The switch to a 4-3-3 appears to have liberated the team which suddenly looks much more fluid both in and out-of-possession.

Byfield said clean sheets are the foundation to success and Myles Roberts was not forced into a single save - just to further illustrate the quality of the defensive performance on Tuesday.

But Walsall look much more of a threat going forward too and had the best chances to snatch maximum points in the second half.

Browne at right-back

Browne had not started a league game since the Saddlers' 2-0 defeat at Cambridge United on New Year's Day prior to Byfield's appointment as interim last week.

Suddenly, Browne has started back-to-back games at right-back and looks as if he has played there for years.

Byfield spoke glowingly about the 22-year-old who he feels has the potential to be one of the best right-backs in the division.

He was solid once again and largely kept Cambridge danger man Sullay Kaikai at bay.

Flint responds

Aden Flint was a surprise omission from the squad ahead of the 3-0 win at Crewe on Saturday but returned to the bench to face Cambridge.

Kacper Lopata was still given the nod over him in the starting XI but Flint climbed off the bench to prove a point with a commanding display.

Not only that, the 36-year-old came closest to a match-winner when his towering back post header was cleared off the line.

Byfield asked a question of Flint and the experienced defender responded in professional fashion. That (as Byfield himself said after the game) is an example to follow.

Confidence restored?

Walsall were on their knees at the end of Mat Sadler's reign after a run of three successive defeats.

But Byfield has managed to change the narrative completely in the space of a week and the fan base is growing quietly optimistic.

The performance in the win at Crewe captured the imagination but to grind out a point against a very strong Cambridge team, and restrict them to scraps, will serve as yet another vital confidence booster.

Wingers

If Byfield is appointed until the end of the season then who will play on the wings will be the most intriguing development to follow.

Albert Adomah bagged a brace and set-up the other at Crewe on Saturday and remarkably completed successive 90 minutes just three days later at the age of 38.

Jid Okeke played on the left on Saturday, but fatigue kept him out, as Aaron Loupalo-Bi was handed his full debut.

The Fulham under-21s loanee is clearly still adapting to the physical rigours of League Two but he demonstrated his qualities in glimpses.

He tracked back to win the ball and set Jamie Jellis racing away on a counter-attack and got into a good position when he towered above his marker, but could not direct Adomah's cross on target.

But there were also elements of his game that still looked very raw. Nonetheless, he will benefit from getting his first start under his belt, and can hopefully use his latest opportunity as a springboard to finish his loan on a high note.
