Rico Richards "enjoying" Walsall challenge after bagging a brace in the EFL Trophy

Rico Richards admits his loan spell at Walsall has been "one of the biggest learning experiences" of his career so far.

The 22-year-old, who is on loan from local rivals Port Vale, scored his first two goals for the club during the Saddlers' 2-1 comeback win at Stevenage in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

Richards has made all three of his starts for Walsall in the EFL Trophy and has totted up just 37 minutes of action in League Two this season.

He conceded that his lack of game time has been frustrating, but insists that he is still enjoying his temporary stay at Bescot.

"It's definitely been one of the biggest learning experiences because it's a whole change for me and it's also a big step," Richards said.

"I'm learning different positions, a different way of playing football and I've enjoyed every step.

"I've had a lot of conversations with the manager. He has helped me stay patient because it's frustrating that I haven't really played too much.

"But I have spoke to him and I know what I need to do, which was the biggest thing. That's what he told me and it has showed today."

'The gaffer has it hard'

The midfielder has not featured in League Two since a second half cameo during the Saddlers' 1-1 draw at Crawley on October 11.

Richards has struggled to break into the team with Charlie Lakin, Courtney Clarke, Ryan Finnigan and Jamie Jellis currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

But Richards is willing to be versatile and acknowledged that Sadler has a difficult job on his hands to keep everyone happy with his selection decisions.

"I don't think people realise that the gaffer really has it hard because there are so many good players here," he added.

"It doesn't matter if we change players because I'm sure he can trust everyone to play in whatever position and do well.

"But it's up to him to decide and it's up to us to prove it when we get the chance."
