Opinion: Mat Sadler’s Walsall jigsaw is being pieced together

Walsall head coach Mat Sadler will have one final chance to scan his eyes over his squad against Solihull Moors on Saturday before the new season gets under way.

He has added 10 summer recruits into his team, but one of the most exciting aspects of pre-season has been the growing versatility in his ranks.

Utility players have generally been the backbone of any successful team. That’s why John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park lifted trophy after trophy at Manchester United. And that’s why Colin Harrison, Brian Caswell, Chris Marsh and Darren Wrack were such indispensable servants for the Saddlers.

Each small decision contributes to the bigger picture of competency, and Sadler has been exploring all his options. The Walsall head coach is gradually fitting the jigsaw pieces together rather than crowbarring players into unfamiliar positions.

Three of the most interesting cases have been the transformations of Tom Knowles, Oisin McEntee and Taylor Allen over the course of the off season.

Knowles has predominantly played as a winger or a centre-forward throughout his career, but looks poised to replace Hayden White at right-wing back. He brings his attacking qualities to his new found role, but also proved that he can cope defensively in the draw with Rochdale.

McEntee was first deployed as a defensive midfielder during the closing stages of last season under Sadler. And he has continued in the centre of the park during the preparations for the new season, with Sadler already confirming that the Irishman will feature regularly in midfield this season.

Chris Hussey and Joe Riley are also adept in multiple positions. Hussey has played the majority of his career at left-back or left wing-back, but has played on the left of a back-three at Bescot so far.

His arrival will also provide Sadler with the opportunity to play with a back-four if he decides to switch from his 3-5-2 formation from time to time.

Not only will the utility players compensate for injuries and suspensions, but more game time for each player will only boost squad morale.

Competition for places look really strong at this stage, and as a result, Walsall look primed for the pursuit of another long League Two campaign.
