One thing really pleased Lee Grant as Walsall remained unbeaten
Jack Dakin spoke to the Saddlers boss after the goalless draw with Exeter City.
Walsall boss Lee Grant was proud of his side’s work-rate in their goalless draw away at Exeter City, but was frustrated with the Saddlers’ display in front of goal.

The visitors mustered just two shots on target against the Grecians, through Reece Smith and Elicha Ahui, but both came in the final four minutes of the 90.
Despite such attacking frustrations away from home, there were plenty of positives from a defensive point of view for Grant and his side, as they secured their fifth clean sheet of the season in front of 755 Saddlers supporters.
However, the 43-year-old highlighted the battling aspect of the affair, with both sides putting bodies on the line in sheer desperation to secure a point.
“Two really hard-working teams, and a different sort of Exeter, but an incredibly hard-working one; they were diligent about their work, as were we,” said Grant. “We know that coming away to any ground in this division is hard, particularly ones that have been in the league above last season.
“They made it very difficult, [but] we also made it very difficult for them.
“There was two teams fighting for all of the yards and the inches and I’m disappointed we didn’t create more or take some of the opportunities that we created.
“I’m certain Matt [Taylor, Exeter boss] will be saying the same in his changing room as well.
“So, although we take the ball more and dominate possession, [it’s] not quite enough from us in terms of finding that last bit.”
The work-rate on show from the Saddlers at St James Park was clear and pleasing to see for Grant, particularly from young midfield duo Charlie Crew and Isaac Moore.
The Walsall boss was quick to praise his players for buying into the high intensity that he demands, especially with 15 summer signings coming through the door in the West Midlands.
“The group is willing to work really, really hard,” said Grant. “We’ve applied that really consistently, so that’s been a pleasure, if I’m honest.
“I congratulate the team on that because it’s not easy - 15 new players in and finding a resolve, finding a work ethic, finding strong principles and we’ve done all of that.
“I’m proud of that and I know they are, but I also know that they want a bit more as well.”
