Oldham discover their attacking groove ahead of Walsall trip

The Latics returned to winning ways in League Two ahead of their trip to Walsall on Tuesday.

Oldham Athletic have discovered their groove in front of goal ahead of their visit to Bescot to face Walsall on Tuesday night.

The Latics followed up a 4-2 victory over Leeds United under-21s in the EFL Trophy with another four-goal showing in their 4-1 demolition of Cheltenham Town at Boundary Park on Saturday.

That ended a six-match winless run in the league and helped them avoid dropping into the relegation zone, as they head to the West Midlands in 19th-place.

Calum Kavanagh has been a reliable provider of goals, with the former Bradford City attacker extending his season tally to five on the weekend.

Nonetheless, Oldham remain winless on the road in League Two so far this season, collecting just a single point from four games.

But boss Michael Mellon is now hopeful that their latest victory can serve as a platform to improve from.

“We came out of the traps really well. We deservedly got ourselves into a commanding lead and then gave away a cheap goal,” Mellon told the Oldham Times.

“Even though we’ve won and played really well in good patches, you could tell we were a team at times that just wanted to get that win and get over the line, which is great from the boys and we managed to do that.

“But we’re a management staff and a team that will want to keep going and keep getting better.”

Former Walsall central defensive duo Donervon Daniels and Manny Monthe now star for the Latics, while goalkeeper Matt Hudson has been key since their return to the Football League in 2025.

Hudson won the golden glove with 19 clean sheets last season and was later named in both the PFA Team of the Year and League Two Team of the Season.
