Lee Grant wants to add "more speed" to his new-look Walsall squad

The Walsall head coach has revealed what he still wants to add to his squad this summer.

Lee Grant says he still wants to add “more speed” to his Walsall squad this summer.

Walsall have added nine new signings so far as part of a major summer rebuild - following the departure of 14 players since the end of last season.

Grant further bolstered his defensive options this week with the signings of Wycombe Wanderers loanee Declan Skura and former Ross County centre-back Ryan Leak.

The Saddlers head coach is now likely to focus more of his attention further up the pitch, as he looks to assemble a balanced squad for the new season.

“I still want us to be a more athletic team as well. More speed in the team would be ideal,” Grant revealed.

“Not easy to recruit for. We’re talking about rare qualities, so we have to put a lot of work in behind the scenes, which we are doing, to try and recruit for that.

“We’ve got some really good players in. I don’t want to give away too much, but I want to make sure we’ve got a really nice balance within the group.

“Probably in terms of what we’ve done in the back half of the pitch with our goalkeeper, our centre-backs and our full-backs, seem really robust.

“We’re about there. Probably in midfield and those forward areas, there are still one or two pieces that can really help us.

“It’s just about trying to find those bits that can add the balance that we need and the contrast to what we have in the building already.”

Walsall currently have 22 players contracted for 2026-27, although that does include academy graduates Jenson Kilroy and Stan Straw, as well as injured defender Harry Williams.

Sven Sprangler, Lewis Simper and Coventry City loanee Isaac Moore have been added to the midfield, while Andrew Dallas and Tai Sodje have bolstered their attacking ranks.
