Lee Grant outlines key ingredient required for every Walsall signing
The summer transfer window will open on June 15 - with Walsall set for a major overhaul.
Lee Grant says “hunger” is a key ingredient he will be looking for in every Walsall signing this summer.
Walsall are braced for a busy summer following the appointment of Grant as their new head coach, after announcing the release of 12 players in early May.
‘Hunger’ key for any signing - Grant
“We want good football players for sure. I'd have to say really high on the checklist is hunger.
“So, does the player want to be here? That's key. Do they have a point to prove? Do they have the bit between their teeth?
“All of these things are really important to me because I think that's going to help give us an edge this year.”
Walsall currently have 13 players under contract next season - although Harry Williams has missed over a year with an Achilles injury.
The club are also in contract discussions with Rico Browne and Albert Adomah whose current deals expire at the end of this month.
‘The margins in this division are fine’
2027: Connor Barrett, Sam Hornby, Ronan Maher, Jenson Kilroy, Elicha Ahui, Vincent Harper (option year), Mason Hancock (option year), Courtney Clarke (option year), Harry Williams (option year).
2028: Aaron Pressley, Harrison Burke (option year).
Unknown: Stan Straw
And Grant has gone into further detail about the profile of player he wants to add to his squad this summer.
He added: “We know the margins in this division are fine. There are different ways in this division to achieve that end goal.
“There are teams this year that have shown that. There are teams that have shown it doing it one way and teams that have shown it doing it a completely different way.
“But some of the factors that are really important is going to be how hungry our team is.
“And that is: hungry for success, hungry to be aggressive, hungry to win the ball back, hungry to get in the box and score goals.
“But we've got to show that real desire to be an aggressive team on both sides of the ball. All of those things will be key when it comes to our recruitment.”
