Lee Grant on 'significant' Walsall win and Swindon officials apology

Walsall emerged with maximum points against Oldham, after three successive draws in League Two.

Lee Grant insists it was “significant” Walsall returned to winning ways against Oldham Athletic - and revealed he has received an apology from the officials following Saturday’s draw at Swindon Town.

Tai Sodje opened the scoring with his fourth goal in three games in all competitions, before Aaron Pressley extended his season tally to eight with a brace.

“It was massive - so don’t underestimate it. We don’t carry things around and we don’t overplay things that don’t need to be overplayed, but that’s significant,” head coach Grant said.

“If there’s something to discuss, or if there’s something to be aware of or concerned about, we don’t ever hide from it.”

That victory ended a run of three successive draws, although the stalemate at Swindon last weekend was shrouded in controversy in the wake of two officiating errors.

Pressley had a goal ruled out, after Sodje was deemed to have been in an offside position - despite the initial shot crossing the line.

Swindon goalkeeper Connor Ripley then escaped a potential red card and the concession of a penalty for his reckless challenge on Sodje.

Grant reveals Swindon officiating apology

Grant has revealed that he has received an apology from the officials for both incidents, which he has accepted.

“But at the same time, if you look at our performance at the weekend, we understood that we’d done enough to win the game,” he added.

“We scored a legitimate goal, we should’ve had a penalty. On that, I’ve had that clarified fully.

“There was no denying any of those facts. There was a huge apology from the officials on that.

“We accept that and we know that we want to turn every game and every opportunity into three points and maximum return.

“When the opportunity isn’t there to do that, then try not to get beat. We’re OK with that and it’s significant that we managed to take that step forward tonight.”
