Dean Smith has no grudge towards Will Grigg

Walsall manager Dean Smith today insisted he bears no grudge toward Will Grigg as the Saddlers prepare to face their former striker.

Smith's men will head to Grigg's new club Brentford on Saturday looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

Grigg turned down a four-deal year to stay at the Banks's Stadium after scoring 20 goals last season and instead switched the Bees at the start of July.

Smith was quoted, at the time, as saying he would not be able to wish the Northern Ireland international any luck, because he had switched to another League One club.

But the Saddlers boss says he, Grigg and the club have all moved on. Smith said: "Will made a choice in the summer. Everyone has a choice about what they want to do and he made that choice.

"But we have moved on, Will has moved on and we don't wish him any harm. We hope he goes on and has a successful career because we laid the foundations for him."

"On Saturday he becomes an opposition player – and we don't wish him well then."

Smith claims his main disappointment was with the player's agent and also revealed he and Grigg remain on good terms.

The Saddlers boss added: "For me, I thought it was disappointing he went to another League One club.

"At the end of the day, Will felt he was going to a club with more ambition than ours. That's what came out in the press. I have been quoted before as saying I don't think his agent did him any favours.

"A player who has just scored 20 goals at League One level, for me, should be going on to play in the Championship."

He added: "The players all keep in touch with him and I keep in touch with him as well because he was a big part of the club since I have been in charge.

"I am really happy to see the things he has written in terms of the football club helping him and his future.

"I will continue to be at the end of the phone should he ever need any help or advice. He was a really good lad to have around here."
