"Control the controllable" - Darren Byfield on his chances of becoming Walsall head coach

An appointment is expected to be made next week following the sacking of Mat Sadler, but Byfield will continue to prepare the team for the visit of Cambridge United to Bescot on Tuesday night.

The 49-year-old did his chances very little harm after switching the formation and overseeing their biggest win of the season in League Two. 

"That is out of my control. My mum god bless her, who has passed away now, but she said just control the controllable Darren and don't think too far ahead," Byfield responded.

"That's how I am. I'm just a happy guy, full of energy and I love Walsall Football Club. 

"So what will be, will be." 

Byfield opted for a change from the 3-5-2 formation played under Sadler, as he switched to a 4-3-3, which included a number of bold selection calls.

Albert Adomah started on the wing and bagged a brace either side of an excellent assist for substitute Aaron Pressley. 

And after marking his debut in the dugout with a win, Byfield has vowed to stick by his beliefs for as long as he is in charge.

"It's what I love to play. That's my formation - I'm a 4-3-3 man," he continued.

"Of course, I know some people say it's brave because you've got a day to prepare. 

"In the back of my head I'm still thinking, have I changed it too quickly? Did I have to wait?

"But I have to go with what I believe and I always will no matter what. What I believe is that we have three people at the top of the pitch that will cause any defence in this league problems. 

"Our squad is very good and what we've got to do is be consistent. Great today and I've told them to enjoy it, but we've got to recover and put in a performance on Tuesday."
