Mat Sadler "not thinking" about if his Walsall future hinges on League Two promotion
Mat Sadler says he has "never thought" about whether his future hinges on Walsall achieving promotion in League Two this season.
Pressure from the fan base continues to intensify on the Walsall boss, following a run of just two wins from 13 games in League Two, which has seen them plummet from the league summit to 11th.
Walsall are still only three points adrift of the play-offs, but are the only team in the division yet to taste victory on home soil in 2026.
Their 2-1 setback against Notts County at Bescot on Saturday condemned the Saddlers to four successive home defeats for the first time since early 2021.
'I'm not thinking about that' - Sadler on his future
When asked if his future hinges on promotion, Sadler replied: "I don't think it's ever something I've thought of from that point of view.
"We recognise where we are as a football club and we want to be competitive in this division season after season.
"That's what we try to do and that's what we've been. So all of that is not anything that I'm thinking about.
"I'm thinking about the disappointment from today and getting ready again for Tuesday."
Critical period looms
Walsall face a critical week in their quest to revive their promotion pursuit, as they travel to sixth-placed Salford City on Tuesday night.
That is followed by a trip to fellow play-off contenders Crewe Alexandra and a home clash against third-placed Cambridge United next week.
"Every season is the same. It's about who picks up at this point of the season and takes that momentum with them," he continued.
"I wouldn't even say that it is other teams having a wobble. It's that everyone is so close in this division and it happens every single season.
"Now it's up to us to wrestle it back from our point of view and we have to that from a base of performances, but we also have to see moments out.
"If it's your turn to show exactly what you're about then that's what you've got to do."
