Walsall captain Jamille Matt set to be "ready to play" against Shrewsbury

Mat Sadler has confirmed Walsall captain Jamille Matt will be "ready to play" against local rivals Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Matt has not featured since picking up a hip problem during the Saddlers' 2-2 draw at Chesterfield on January 31.

The 36-year-old has also recently had a scan followed by an injection on a separate knee issue, but returned to first team training last weekend.

And Sadler is confident that the experienced striker will be ready to make his comeback in the early kick-off in Shropshire.

"Failing anything that changes, Jamille will be ready to play on Saturday," boss Sadler confirmed.

Walsall will travel to Croud Meadow off the back of a seven-match winless run following their 2-0 home defeat against MK Dons on Monday

Sadler made two changes from the team which drew 2-2 at Grimsby Town last week - including the immediate return of top scorer Daniel Kanu from illness.

Notable absences purely tactical

Connor Barrett has not featured in the Walsall squad for the past two games along with Evan Weir and Mason Hancock.

Connor Barrett, Evan Weir and Mason Hancock were left out of the squad for the second successive game, while January signing Alfie Chang was also another notable absentee.

Barrett and Weir had been out-of-sorts prior to their recent spell out of the team and Hancock is still finding his feet following a five-month lay-off due to a dislocated knee.

But Sadler has reassured that the quartet have not been nursing any injuries and that his selection calls were purely tactical.

"As you saw in the last game [at Grimsby], there was a real energy about the group," he added.

"So I saw no need to change that too much. Daniel [Kanu] came in and we wanted him to provide the attacking threat that he has done for us all season.

"They defended really well against Daniel, but yes, that's the squad I went with."
