The Saddlers boss is keen to add three or four new faces before the transfer window closes in October but claims nothing is close and is content to remain patient and ensure finds the right players.

George Nurse and Rory Holden are the two additions the club have made so far with the season now just five days away.

Clarke said: “We had a massive turnover last summer. There were never going to be wholesale changes this year.

“We have given a lot of our young players a chance in pre-season and we will be looking to strengthen the squad and we certainly will be strengthening the squad.

“I know the positions we need to strengthen. It is a waiting game and that is the way we are working it to make sure we have the right players.”

Clarke carried out the largest squad overhaul in the EFL last summer after being appointed following the club’s relegation from League One.

He hopes the hard work of what was sometimes a tough first season in charge will now pay dividends.

He continued: “The environment is spot on now, the way the lads train and conduct themselves. Now, as in every season, a manager has to win matches, so that will be the aim.”

“I think a lot of clubs like ourselves the finances are very tight. There are a lot us in the same boat, the same situation.

“We will see how things pan out but I feel like there is a good togetherness about the club. The players have a good spirit among them and we are looking forward to it.”
