Birmingham hero DJ Campbell admitted equalising against promotion rivals Sunderland was the one of the most important goals of his career.

And the striker has targeted winning a permanent place in Steve Bruce's starting line-up after his 10th goal of the season gave Blues a lifeline.

Substitute Campbell, who had only been on the pitch for six minutes, struck with just seconds left of normal time against Roy Keane's excellent side after they trailed to Carlos Edwards' first-half wonder strike.

His goal kept Blues third in the Championship, and they have two games in hand on the in-form Black Cats.

"That was one of the most important goals I've scored, considering the situation we were in," said Campbell.

"We were losing 1-0, and this team wants to be in the Premiership. We need all the points we can, so to equalise was great.

"My head's been down for a few weeks, but it was good to get back on the scoresheet and get a point.

"Before the game we wouldn't have settled for a point - we wanted three points and that's our motto this year."

Campbell has now set his sights on gatecrashing Bruce's starting line-up.

The former Brentford man is behind £3m duo Cameron Jerome and Rowan Vine, as well as Nicklas Bendtner.

But he is determined to give his manager something to think about.

"Every time I train, or come on, I do the best I can to prove I should be playing," said Campbell.

"But the gaffer chooses his team. All I can do is stick in there, keep giving it 110 per cent.

"Hopefully when I do get a chance, I can change games like I did last night."
