Southampton 0 Aston Villa 3: Player ratings

Still had to make a couple of saves despite Villa's dominance. The second from Fernandes was particularly impressive.

Saves 7

Matty Cash

Strong defensively but would have liked to make more of the attacking positions he found himself in. Crossing was a bit of a disappointment.

Mixed 6

Ezri Konsa

Never the kind of afternoon when you thought Konsa was going to be overly troubled. Did what he had to do with the minimum of fuss.

Assured 7

Tyrone Mings

Caught out in the first half with a neat through ball from Walker-Peters which saw Archer get in. Another win for Villa with him in the team.

Solid 7

Ian Maatsen

His pace is an asset in defence but he would have liked to have done more with the crossing opportunities which came his way in the final third.

Steady 6

Amadou Onana

Tested Ramsdale with an effort from distance early in the second half. Kept things ticking over in midfield and got better as the game went on.

Shot 7

Youri Tielemans

Always looked the most likely player to unlock the Southampton defence. Registered another assist thanks to Watkins' fine finish.

Pinpoint 7

Morgan Rogers

Kept battling and got his rewards, finding Watkins for the penalty and then setting up Malen for the second goal.

Dogged 7

Marco Asensio

The perfect start to his Villa career couldn't last forever. Was surprising he took the second penalty after missing the first.

Human 5

Jacob Ramsey

Caused trouble in the first half when he ran at the home defence but at other times he struggled for space. A frustrating day.

Shackled 6

Marcus Rashford

Picked out by Tielemans in the first minute but saw his shot blocked. Had his moments but just like Villa on the whole for the first three-quarters of the game, he lacked a little poise.

Frustrated 5
