Redknapp is due at Villa Park on Saturday for the first time since his outburst at his treatment from Villa fans, who ridiculed him following a television documentary on bungs screened shortly before the teams met last season.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill – a veteran of the legendary Old Firm hostilities from his time as Celtic chief – says Redknapp must cope with whatever flack flies his way.

O'Neill said: "He is not the only manager to have been booed by opposition fans. I have had it myself.

"I only had to go and sit in the dug-out at Ibrox to know what it is all about. You deal with it accordingly. You just get on with it.

"If it's ferocious language attached to it and it is offensive to young people in the ground, and you think: 'Is that the sort of example that you really want to be setting?' I think I would draw the line there.

"But in terms of players and managers getting booed, as Roy Keane said, you just have to take it."

O'Neill has also denied speculation linking Marlon Harewood to Reading in part exchange for Kevin Doyle.

He added: "I don't know where it is rearing its head from."
