Aston Villa's Ian Maatsen: I predicted Ezri Konsa goal against Wolves

Ian Maatsen reckons Villa are showing they have a team full of match-winners after revealing he told Ezri Konsa he would score before Saturday’s win over Wolves.

Defender Konsa netted for just the second time since 2021 to put Villa ahead in the 88th minute, as Unai Emery’s team came from behind to clinch victory for the second weekend running.

Ollie Watkins had earlier cancelled out Matheus Cunha’s first-half opener for the visitors, with Jhon Duran then netting for the fourth time after coming off the bench to round off a 3-1 victory.

Maatsen said: “Everyone is capable of scoring. That’s what we believe in.

“We keep calm, we keep the ball, we know our players are going to make a difference. We always believe we can come from behind.

“I’m pleased for Ezri. I told him before the game: ‘You’re gonna score’. And he did. Hopefully, that’s just the first of many.”

Konsa’s goal was his first since he netted in last season’s home win over Wolves.

Just as in the previous weekend’s 3-2 win over Everton, Villa were much improved in the second half as they fought back to make it four victories in their opening five Premier League matches, their best start to a season since 1998.

Left-back Maatsen, the £37.5million summer signing from Chelsea, was among those to impress off the bench. The 22-year-old is primed to make his first Villa start at Wycombe in the Carabao Cup tomorrow and determined to grasp every chance to impress.

He said: “Every time I have to be ready. I work hard and we push each other. On Saturday it was my turn to come on and make an impact. Maybe next week, it’s the other way around. I’m just happy to get minutes. It’s still a process.

“I’m happy to be at Villa. There’s a lot to learn. I’m easy, I’m composed. I’m just trying to do my best. Every minute I want to show the quality I have.

“Of course, it’s a bit difficult (not to start). But there will be opportunities.

“I have to be ready to make an impact and today I did that to help my team mates. Maybe next time, is my time. I just have to be ready.

“We came back strong. We kept believing. We trust in our belief and our ability. We kept the ball moving. We played strong. We didn’t rush, we made good decisions.”
