Aston Villa v Bournemouth - Match preview

John McGinn admits Villa’s players must get used to squad rotation claiming the club has never had such strength in depth.

McGinn made his first start in more than a month following injury in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Bologna when boss Unai Emery made four changes to his line-up.

The boss is expected to keep ringing the changes as he looks to keep players fresh as Villa target success on four fronts.

Tomorrow’s Premier League visit of Bournemouth is followed by a Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace next Wednesday, when a win would send Villa through the quarter-finals.

McGinn said: “Competition for places means 90 minutes might not be an every week thing now.

“If the squad is fresher we will be rotating a lot more and you just have to respect that.

“You want to play every game but you also want to be successful and if it means playing five minutes or 55 you just have to accept it. That is what we are trying to build.”

McGinn was one of five players to suffer a hamstring injury during the opening months of the season but all are now recovered while Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia and Boubacar Kamara are all back from long-term knee injuries.

Midfielder Kamara made his first appearance since February against Bologna, while Mings was named in a matchday squad for the first time in 14 months.

The defender travelled with the squad to Fulham last weekend but was not included in the 20-man matchday group. Youngsters Lamare Bogarde and Kosta Nedeljkovic, both of whom played in the early weeks of the season, also find themselves on the fringes now senior players are back fit, while Jhon Duran’s excellent form means Emery had the luxury of resting Ollie Watkins against Bologna.

McGinn said: “Me and Ty spoke about it at the weekend. It was probably one of the strongest benches Villa ever had on Saturday.

“It only lasted three days that record because I think Tuesday night tonight tops it. The strength in depth is amazing.”

Kamara and Mings, like Buendia, suffered knee ligament injuries and McGinn continued: “The reception Bouba got (when he came on) was amazing. Ty got a similar one when he warmed up.

“I have been fortunate enough in my career not to experience that injury but my brother has and I know how difficult it is to come back.

“Just mentally, coming in every day, it is a career threatening injury. Bouba is a world class player and we are delighted to have him.”

Villa are unbeaten in three Premier League meetings with Bournemouth since losing 2-0 on the south coast on the opening day of the 2022-23 season under Steven Gerrard.

Emery’s team are looking to build on the club’s best start to a league campaign since 1998 but the manager will be eager for his players to be switched on early, after conceding the first goal in five out of eight top flight matches so far.
