Aston Villa hero set to hit big screen in Netflix documentary

Martinez produced a stunning save in Aston Villa’s European clash with Nottingham Forest.

Emi Martinez has never been too far from the headlines during his time at Aston Villa.

Most of the time it is for his goalkeeping ability that has led him to become the best goalkeeper in the world on more than one occasion.

And now he is hitting the big screen - with the Villa keeper set to become subject of a new Netflix documentary.

It has been confirmed that the film ‘Emi Martinez: The Kid Who Stops Time’, will be coming to the online streaming platform on May 28, ahead of the World Cup.

The documentary on the World Cup winner is being produced by an Argentina production company, who has previously produced a film on former winger Angel Di Maria.

It will chronicle Martinez’s journey from being a young player, going on to sign for Arsenal and signing on loan for the likes of Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday, all the way to his heroic performance in the World Cup final.

It will combine archive footage and interviews with the likes of Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, Lionel Scaloni, and Miguel Ángel “Pepé” Santoro.

There is an animation element to the documentary too and has been inspired by Hernan Casciari’s short story, ‘The Kid Who Stops Time’, which is about a boy who discovers he can argue with footballs and stop time.
