The 23-year-old Wales international is among the targets under consideration should they decide to move in the market.

Any business will be done toward the end of the month with Villa, who spent more than £70m in the previous window, maintaining a watching brief for now.

Currently their season remains on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic which has closed their training ground.

The Premier League are due to make a decision on whether Sunday’s home match with Everton goes ahead, after Villa raised concerns over a lack of preparation time.

Bodymoor Heath has been closed since last Thursday when it emerged nine players and 14 members of staff in total had tested positive for coronavirus.

It is thought Smith’s squad may not be able to train again until Saturday at the earliest.

Should the visit of the Toffees be postponed, it would see Villa end the weekend with four matches in hand on some clubs.

Their next game after Everton is a trip to Manchester City next Wednesday, itself postponed from the opening week of the campaign. Villa have home matches with Newcastle and Tottenham which also still need to be rearranged.
