Dean Smith is known to be on the hunt for a new shot-stopper this summer with Stoke’s Jack Butland and Cardiff’s Neil Etheridge believed to be at the top of his shopping list.

But McCarthy has now emerged as an alternative.

The 29-year-old, who has been capped once by England, is understood to be available with the Saints also having Angus Gunn in their ranks.

Gunn was snapped up from Norwich last summer for a fee in excess of £10million.

And Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is eager to trim the wage bill having signed Che Adams, Danny Ings and Standard Liege’s Moussa Djenepo.

Villa could face competition from Liverpool for McCarthy however.

The Champions League winners are likely to be on the hunt for a back-up to Alisson Becker with Simon Mignolet linked with a move away.

And McCarthy is understood to be among the players Jurgen Klopp is considering bring in.

Villa want to bring in a new keeper this summer to rival Jed Steer for the number one jersey.

Lovre Kalinic is understood to have been made available for transfer.
