Hourihane became the club’s first central midfielder since David Platt to net double figures in the league when he scored 11 last year and opened his account for the current campaign by netting the only goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win at Yeovil.

The 27-year-old is eager to surpass last season’s mark this season but also wants to become more of a creative threat and set-up more goals for his team-mates.

The Republic of Ireland international already has two assists to his name this term and laid on Birkir Bjarnason’s stoppage-time winner against Wigan last week.

“The aim and the plan is to get into double figures again and beat the tally I got last year,” he said. “I’d like to add more assists to my game as well, I think I only had three last season.

“Even though my goal return was good last year my assist numbers weren’t so good, so I want to get more.”

Villa head to Ipswich tomorrow aiming for a win which would see them start the season with three consecutive league victories for the first time since 1962.

Teenage defender Mitch Clark has joined League Two Port Vale on a season-long loan.
