After failing to secure promotion to the Premier League last month via the play-offs, Villa were one of the favourites to get promoted in the 2018/19 season.

But after revelations regarding the club's financial crisis, potential sales of key players and subsequent suspension of Keith Wyness - the bookies have altered odds regarding potential relegation dramatically.

Some bookmakers have now listed Villa as low as 6/1 to get relegated to League One next season, after previously having them at 25/1 just days ago.

This makes Villa eighth favourites with the bookies to go down next season, ahead of local rivals Birmingham City (9/1 to face the drop) - who finished 19th, a full 37 points behind Steve Bruce's side.

Ironically, this hasn't affected odds regarding promotion from the Championship - with Villa still 4/1 with some companies to go up next season, and 9/1 to go up as champions.

Fellow neighbours West Brom are 3/1 to secure promotion, second favourites behind Stoke City at 2/1.

At the other end of the table, League One play-off winners Rotherham are the favourites to go back down (evens), shortly followed by Bolton (6/4) and Ipswich (11/4).

It has emerged Villa are currently working with HMRC to resolve an unpaid tax bill, thought to total in the region of £4-6million.

Owner and chairman Tony Xia has assumed the role of chief executive, with the club confident the issue will be quickly resolved.

Failure to win promotion to the Premier League had already left Villa facing a £40million black hole in relation to Financial Fair Play.
