The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international joins in a two-year deal after spending nine years in Staffordshire with the Potters.

The club confirmed his decision to sign online, and the midfielder expressed his delight at joining the Villans as they hope to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

"I have enjoyed happy times at Stoke City but now is the time for a new football adventure – and what a club to join in Aston Villa." he said.

“We may be in the Championship but everything about this club screams Premier League – and it’s the job of the players to get us back up there."

The former Manchester City, Bury and Sheffield Wednesday man also stated that he's excited to get to work under Steve Bruce, who's now secured his fourth summer signing following the captures of John Terry, Sam Johnstone and Ahmed Elmohamady.

"I am looking forward to working with Steve Bruce." he said.

"I know he has a phenomenal record in achieving promotion to the top-flight and, having spoken to him at length, I am more than aware of how much he wants to get back there again with this great club."
