FA Cup hero returns to Kidderminster Harriers ahead of Doncaster clash

The midfielder played a big role in the club’s last big run in the competition.

Kidderminster Harriers have re-signed an FA Cup hero as they target another giant-killing on Saturday.

League One Doncaster Rovers visit Aggborough, with the home side looking to advance beyond the first round for the first time since their memorable run to fourth round in 2022, when they came within a whisker of knocking out West Ham.

In what feels very appropriate timing, midfielder Sam Austin - who played in that epic tie against the Hammers - has returned to boost Harriers after joining on a season-long loan from Southend.

Austin made 200 appearances for the club between 2016 and 2022 and scored in their most recent Cup giant-killing - a third round win over Reading.

The 29-year-old has been a long-time target for boss Paul Wotton, who told the Express & Star: “I didn’t know Sam from his first spell at Kidderminster but he came to my attention during his time at Notts County.

“He is a player I have liked for a long time. I have been trying to get this one done since I got through the door really.

“We weren’t sure we could get it done but this week, finally, we have. It is a no-brainer for us to sign him. He gives us another option in the forward areas, which is where we are lacking at the moment.

“He brings real quality, is a highly intellectual player and wants to be here.”

Wotton is excited by the opportunity Saturday’s tie represents and aware of the club’s Cup history.

Doncaster sit 20th in League One and while Harriers have been in patchy form of late, with their fourth qualifying round win over Solihull Moors their only victory in nine, the boss remains in an upbeat mood.

“It is still one of the greatest cup competitions in the world,” he said.

“It has been tarnished a little bit with some of the Premier League clubs playing weakened sides and the kick-off times being moved around.

“But for non-league clubs it is a huge opportunity to firstly make a bit of money, which is obvious - and then try to be giant-killers.

“Why not have a go at it. There is no pressure at all on us. We are playing a League One side and in all reality, we should not win the game.

“But we are going to have a right good go at it.

“I haven’t had a tremendous record as a manager in the Cup and I want to change that.

“We are really looking forward to the game.”

Wotton continued: “I still feel we are in good form. Other than the first half against Solihull, which was disappointing, we’ve been consistent.

“We have been working our way through injuries and suspensions and things have been a little disjointed. But I am excited for what is to come.”

Hednesford Town will aim to keep pushing up the National League North table when they host Morecambe.

In the Southern League Premier Central, Stourbridge visit Needham Market, Rushall Olympic go to Real Bedford and Halesowen Town host Antsey.
