Explained: Why Aston Villa face another summer balancing act

Efforts to bolster Unai Emery’s squad are unlikely to be easy.

Villa are braced for another balancing act this summer with Unai Emery placing the recruitment emphasis on attack.

The boss is eager to bolster his forward options with the aim of kicking on from the success of winning the Europa League.

But despite qualifying for the Champions League, Villa are again having to tread very carefully in the market, to ensure they comply with the terms of a settlement agreement struck last year with Uefa, following a breach of financial fair play rules.

Most of Emery’s focus is on attacking areas with Villa looking to bring in two wide players who can add pace to the team.

A striker is also being sought, placing some doubt over the future of Tammy Abraham, while Emery would like a right-sided defender to provide cover and competition for Matty Cash.

Any incomings, however, will need to be balanced by outgoings.

Villa are prepared to offload Leon Bailey and Evann Guessand, while the future of goalkeeper Emi Martinez remains in doubt.

Reports in Italy claim talks have taken place between Juventus and the Argentina international's agent, though Villa are yet to receive any formal approach.

Much may hinge on what happens with Morgan Rogers. The Halesowen-born midfielder has several suitors, though Villa are reluctant to sell and are expected to demand at least £100m for one of Emery’s most important players.

Rogers is not pushing to leave and no movement is expected until after the World Cup.

Villa’s attacking targets include Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes and Paris Saint-Germain’s teenage star Ibrahim Mbaye.
