Saddlers keeper Jed Ward twice denied home striker Sonny Cox in the opening half at St James’s Park.

The visitors were better as an attacking force after the break and only a well-timed block prevented Ryan Leak from getting an effort on target.

Courtney Clarke then fired over when he should have done better before Ajay Matthews missed a great chance for the home side late on.

The clean sheet was the fifth in seven matches kept by Lee Grant’s team.
