Dave Edwards: Wolves need football experience in behind scenes shake-up
Jeff Shi's departure was huge news in the world of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It got to a really tough position for him with the emotion in the fan base and how the fans feel that the football club is being run.
He was new into football when he arrived in 2016 and I was at the football club then and had numerous conversations with him.
His heart was always in the right place, he was desperate for Wolves to be a success. He really listened to everyone and tried to implement the right changes.
The first few years were unbelievable, he took Wolves to places we would never have dreamt of. Jeff was a big part of that success.
Towards the end you could see what was happening on the pitch was being affected by certain decisions being made and it was really unfortunate that it ended like that.
Moving forward, the next appointment is so important. I think having someone come in with some football experience is key because we're going through a huge transition as a football club, like we were when Fosun first came in.
Nathan Shi has come in as interim but for long-term success the permanent appointment will have to be thought through by Fosun carefully and hopefully they get it right.
I felt the decision probably rallied the fans at Molineux. The atmosphere was very good. It's been difficult for the players to play in recent games, but I feel like everyone came together against Brentford and saw it as a real opportunity to get that elusive win.
But the fans have to have something to go off on the pitch - a moment, a player - something to really get them going.
Every time there was just a glimmer of an attack, you could see the fans voicing how happy they were with that and getting behind them, but it didn't happen often enough.
Rob Edwards set the team up well. I liked his selection with Fer Lopez coming in and he had some moments on the ball, but physically he doesn't look where he needs to be.
The forced defensive changes was an area that hurt Wolves, particularly losing Matt Doherty from right-wing-back. That damages Wolves because it's been a problem position this season.
Ki-Jana Hoever and Jackson Tchatchoua are struggling for confidence and Doherty is very good on the ball in that position.
Santi Bueno did well when he came in, while Ladislav Krejci did not have his best game and was culpable for the first goal.
I could see the tactics, what they wanted to do. They were happy for Brentford to have the ball, they were happy to sit a little bit deeper, but when you do that, and what Edwards would have been trying to do, was make that transition clinical. That's where Wolves really let themselves down.
They'd win the ball back, and within two or three passes, they'd given it back to Brentford, and their attack started again. They needed to get Hwang Hee-chan running in behind but we didn't see it enough.
But Wolves were still in the game and Brentford were there for the taking. You do need a player to try and grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
Joao Gomes tried to do that and take matters into his own hands - he was excellent - but when he does that it leaves a big hole in midfield.
Once again Wolves got to around the 60th minute and conceded again - we seem to be losing concentration in those moments and it was a terrible goal to give away.
Krejci's been brilliant since he's come to Wolves, but he just completely misjudged the fly of the ball and got caught.
Then the second goal, we win it back and Hwang gives it away again. Both goals were very avoidable.
If Wolves had got to the last 15 minutes at 0-0, they'd have been the team pushing for a winner, but conceding the first goal really killed Wolves. Both goals were absolute gifts.
J.Gomes had a good game, while Hwang is getting better. I still want more from him but his movement is very good and maybe we are seeing signs that he is getting closer to returning to form.
I do feel really sorry for Jorgen Strand Larsen because there is no doubt that he is working hard, but his confidence is low and that was summed up with that penalty miss.
A big positive coming on was Mateus Mane. The fans have been calling for him to start and I'm 50-50 with that because he makes such an impact coming off the bench when the game is a little bit spread.
Can he do that from the start? Edwards is going to have to throw him in because he's direct, tries to make things happen and that's something that Wolves haven't got.
January is only around the corner and this football team is crying out for some pace and some attacking intent. That's got to be the top of the shopping list for Edwards.
Let's just hope that we can be inventive enough in the recruitment area to entice the right sort of players. It's going to be difficult with the position they're in, but we're also desperate for some attacking players to come in with a little bit more creativity and pace.
