Dave Edwards: Wolves must put the City game to bed and end season on a high

There was a lot of belief that Wolves could go to the Etihad on Friday and get a win.

I listened to Pep Guardiola speak the day before the game in his press conference and he was full of admiration for Vitor Pereira, a lot of the Wolves players and how they play, how efficient they are and how much they could hurt the opposition.

Pep definitely didn't take the game lightly, they've fighting for a Champions League spot and it was a big game for them.

For the opening 30 minutes, Wolves lived up to that expectation. Without seeming to be brilliant, they were very, very effective and should have been 2-0 up.

The Munetsi chance was the big one. It was an excellent pass by Cunha through to Bellegarde, who gets his pass to Munetsi wrong at the vital moment.

It's an easy pass as well and he'll be really disappointed with that.

Rayan Ait-Nouri then had his chance and City were rocked in the opening half an hour.

We then saw a rare giveaway from Andre, which will happen with the number of times he takes balls under pressure. He's so reliable with it, but there's always going to be a moment when he does give it away. Unfortunately, it was against Man City, who can punish teams on that turnover of possession, and they did.

After that is where most Wolves fans will be disappointed with the way the game played out.

Wolves were on the ropes for the rest of the first half. I thought they might come out with a bit of a reaction in the second half, but I do understand that playing against Man City when you're losing 1-0 is a very difficult task because they can suck the ambition out of you with the way they keep the ball. It's very hard for the opposition to work to win it back and then have the energy to attack.

Wolves were unable to make any sort of impact on Man City in that second half. It turned into quite a boring second half, which is a shame.

We really missed Jorgen Strand Larsen and we missed his movement, his physicality, something a little bit different.

The other thing I think we lacked was a bit of impact off the bench. We've got good players, the likes of Rodrigo Gomes and Sarabia coming on, a lot of them were like-for-like changes and that's where Wolves are going to have to look in the summer to try and develop a squad with some balance.

They're not far away at the moment, but we're expecting to lose players and adding some pace will be key.

Also having some younger players, who follow the model of wanting to develop at the club and not start every week, but who can make a real impact from the bench.

It was a game that got away from us and we didn't have anyone on the day that could grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

But we showed how far we've come, to go away to the Etihad and be really disappointed with a 1-0 defeat and earlier in the season we didn't have that expectation.

Six wins on the bounce before this, still lots of positive things to happen, and an exciting end to the season as well.

I think we've got three really good games in Brighton at home, Palace away, and then Brentford at home.

Their positions in the tables are 10th, 12th and 9th respectively and these are the teams I believe Wolves should be competing with and finishing above next season.

It will be a really good test of where we're at now and what we need for next season because they're winnable games.

We can quite easily finish with nine points for those three games, or we can also quite easily finish with zero points.

We have to approach it in the right way. If we do come away from those games with two wins then we'll finish higher up the table than what we are now. Let's continue to finish strongly with momentum and then it'll be a really interesting summer with some great games to come.

Put the City game to bed, it was a game which didn't quite happen for us, but after the run we've been on it's not the end of the world.
