Dave Edwards: Special night at Molineux sets Wolves up for a big week
Wolves' win against Aston Villa was a special night that sets us up for a big week ahead.
It was a much-needed three points to continue somewhat of a mini revival, with two wins, two draws and the Crystal Palace loss in the last five, including three clean sheets.
The biggest win of the evening was surpassing Derby's record of the lowest ever points tally. That is something no one associated with Wolves wanted at all, so getting past that is a relief.
Friday night's under the lights always have potential to be special, the rain and the weather wasn't playing into that narrative, but as the game wore on and we got close to that finish line, it was another one of those nights at Molineux, one of those occasions which really was one to remember.
A derby day win, a last-minute goal to celebrate and take the pressure off, ending with a really nice moment as Rob Edwards was flying down the touchline.
I don't think I've seen him do that since 2016 when we drew 4-4 with Fulham at Molineux and I scored to put us 4-3 ahead in injury time, so it was nice to see him do that again.
The game against Villa was a little bit edgy in the first half. Wolves had to defend well, defending corners in particular, brave defending with blocks, but then in the second half it really grew into life.
Off the back of a good spell for Wolves, they managed to take the lead with a terrific goal from Joao Gomes. He was heavily involved in the build-up and setting up the attack, and the finish was excellent and clinical.
Wolves controlled the game really well without the ball after scoring and limited Villa to very little. The one scary moment towards the end saw Jose Sa make a save and Mosquera cleared one off the line, but you're going to expect that from a team like Villa that is fighting for a Champions League spot.
Then, Wolves countered through Mateus Mane and J.Gomes, and the bundle of energy that is Rodrigo Gomes popped up in the right place at the right time to get his goal.
Those scenes were very, very special. Everyone involved in them, all the players in front of the South Bank. There haven't been too many of them this season, it's only our second Premier League win, but it was nice that the fans got to feel that.
Of course, it's pretty much certain that we won't survive relegation, but these are the moments we need to try and build on for next season, to try and take some momentum into the summer and also into the next two games against Liverpool.
There were some really good performances in there from certain players. J.Gomes was terrific and was the player that all Wolves fans have come to love and watch. He hasn't quite been on it as much in the last couple of months, but that performance shows why I think that he could play for any team in the Premier League.
He was combative all over the pitch and showed quality in big moments.
Hugo Bueno continued to impress me down that left-hand side. He's really growing into a top left-wing-back in the Premier League.
He has excellent quality on the ball. Defensively, he gets better and better every single week. He looks fitter as well, because he's had injury problems and would often tire towards the end of games. He's probably in his best vein of form as a Wolves player.
But Tchatchoua is still a little bit of an enigma. He really struggled in possession in the first half, but showed glimmers in the second half of what he can do.
He was heavily involved in that first goal with his pace. We urge him to run to the ball and get to the byline, but it doesn't help him when team-mates run into his space.
Quite often he receives on the right-hand side and then there'll be a midfield run into the right-hand channel, but I think you just need to leave him alone. You need to stay away from that area completely, give him space to be able to knock it and run, because as soon as one of our own players occupies that space, that means he has to come inside and that's when he struggles on the ball.
His pace scares anyone and I'd like to see him use it more, but there's no doubt he needs to improve his overall performance.
It was an excellent win and it sets you up nicely for these two games against Liverpool.
If I were to prioritise one, it would be the second one on Friday night. An FA Cup run and setting up a quarter-final tie would be really nice.
Liverpool are an excellent team, but you just hope that it can be another special atmosphere like it was against Villa last Friday.
Hopefully Wolves can continue this little resurgence in form and get two more results.
