Cheltenham Town vs Walsall preview: Mat Sadler set for Saddlers century

Walsall boss Mat Sadler insists he is only "looking forward, not backwards" as he closes in on a century of matches in the dugout at Cheltenham Town this evening.

The Saddlers have recovered from their midseason blip to move eight points clear at the League Two summit with back-to-back wins over Chesterfield and Morecambe respectively.

Goals from Taylor Allen and Jamie Jellis secured a 2-0 success on the Lancashire coast on Saturday to end a run of three successive away defeats in League Two.

Sadler will mark his 100th game in charge of Walsall by coming up against his predecessor Michael Flynn, who is now in charge of 11th-place Cheltenham.

When asked if he looks back with pride at reaching his latest milestone, Sadler said: "I don't reflect. I don't look back, I only look forward.

"I'll look back at 113 games (at the end of the season) but for now we're very much so on the journey. We're just at the start of a big spell of games, we've got to be right on the front foot and attack every moment in them.

"It's never easy coming to any stadium away from home, as you saw (Morecambe) was no different.

"We're pleased to get that one done and now we move on to the next one."

Sadler was forced to shuffle his pack in the centre of the park at Morecambe with Charlie Lakin missing out due to illness.

Brandon Comley was handed his first league start of the campaign and produced a disciplined display, with Ryan Stirk and goal scorer Jellis impressing alongside him.

Stirk performed a hybrid role, alternating cleverly between the 'six' and 'eight' positions to great effect, while Jellis dazzled between the lines in the '10' role.

Sadler praised Comley for his performance and feels the 29-year-old has an important part to play for the team between now and the end of the season.

"Brandon is a leader and a fantastic person to be around. He has obviously had a couple of knocks this season but what you can certainly rest yourself on with Brandon is that he will give everything for the team," he continued.

"He puts his foot in at the right time, he made really good decisions on when to settle the game down and he shows what a fantastically important player he will be for us.

"I'm pleased for Brandon. I didn't realise it was his first league start which is crazy when you look at how he played at times last season but it also fills me with pride that we can look forward to the end of the season with him."

Lakin remains a doubt for the trip to Gloucestershire, while centre-back Harry Williams was an unused substitute at Morecambe after he was rested due to a minor knee issue.

Josh Gordon was ruled out for two months with another hamstring problem last week, and joined Donervon Daniels (calf), Priestley Farquharson (thigh), Jack Earing (ankle) and George Hall (hamstring) in the treatment room.
