Cesar Peixoto calls for patience in Wolves mentality rebuild
The boss was critical of his team following Tuesday’s draw with Portsmouth.
Boss Cesar Peixoto says it will take time to completely rebuild the mentality of his Wolves players.
The head coach believes some confidence has been restored following last season’s relegation from the Premier League.
But on Friday, while also issuing a further plea for supporters to get behind his team, Peixoto acknowledged there is still work to be done.
The Portuguese accused players of lacking “courage” in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Portsmouth.
Wolves host Watford on Saturday needing a win to lift the mood and Peixoto said: “To change a mentality takes time. It is not like that, we change the mentality and everything is OK.
“No, sometimes you are OK, sometimes you have lower moments and that is why we have to stay together and push again until the moment we stay with consistency in our mentality and stability in results.
“To build a team, to build a mentality, is not just like that.
“I think it is wrong when we think it will be easy for Wolves to get to the Premier League.
“It is going to be tough. It is possible, for sure. I don’t have doubts about it. We are going to fight for it.
“But to change a mentality takes time. We need time and the players need time. The club needs our supporters. That is what I think. In these kind of moments are when we have to stay more strong, more positive and push the guys again.”
Wolves have taken just four points from four matches since the international break.
Yet Peixoto, managing for the first time outside of Portugal, believes tough moments are inevitable during a long 46-match season.
“I understand Wolves stayed eight years in the Premier League and people think it will be easy, win all the games and go again,” he said.
“But football is not like that. The players showed this year with me quality and courage to play.
“It is possible for them to play with courage, like they showed against West Brom, like they showed against Stoke.
“You don’t change a mentality like Wolves had in the past, with a bad moment, like that. It takes time.
“The players have shown they want to work hard. But we are going to have moments like this, I don’t doubt that.”
