Carlos Corberan highlights optimism with West Brom changes

Boss Carlos Corberan was satisfied by the impact of his second-half substitutions despite Albion's failed bid to end their winless run at Luton on Friday night.

Late pushes for a winner were in vain as the spoils were shared following a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road as the stuttering Baggies drew for a fifth match in a row, making it seven without success.

Despite that run Albion clung on to a Championship play-off place as rivals failed to take advantage later in the weekend.

Corberan's side grew stronger in the second half in Bedfordshire, having taken the lead through Josh Maja at the end of a poor first-half display. An Alex Mowatt error was pounced on by Tahith Chong on the hour before both sides pushed for a winner - with Corberan content with the influence of his changes including Jayson Molumby, Tom Fellows, Mikey Johnston, John Swift and a very rare outing for striker Devante Cole.

Corberan, who made four changes to his starting XI for the second game running, said:  "Yes, I think in general the changes we did helped us to understand the game well and help create the game we wanted to create.

"I like that Molumby was playing well, Cole was playing well. Johnston was helping, Swifty too. Fellows had some moments too.

"In general the players from the bench helped to finish with the feeling that we had."

Summer free transfer Cole, 29, has seen opportunities limited so far this season with emphasis on top scorer Maja to shoulder the burden. More often than not former Barnsley frontman Cole has not made the 20-man league matchday squad.

Corberan has said he regrets how little opportunities the striker has but Cole gave a lively cameo at Luton and went close to a winner with a speculative overhead kick late on.

Cole and Maja briefly operated up front together as Albion hunted a winner.

"I think he is a different striker to the one we had in Maja. We keep the same plan to use him on the pitch as we did with Jed Wallace, someone who can use movement more when Maja drops to create one-v-one with defenders," added Corberan.

"I think it is not easy to play in the first time and in this demanding game. In general I saw him better in attack than in defence (pressing) and that is what you want of one striker."

Albion bid to return to winning ways after more than a month with a clash against fourth-placed Burnley at The Hawthorns on Thursday night.
