'Big move': What is the Ryan Mason change that could help West Brom avoid Middlesbrough scenario

The first mini bump of the Ryan Mason era at Albion has arrived - as Albion suffered their second successive defeat at Middlesbrough on Friday.

An unhappy hunting ground for Albion for quite some time - Mason's side left themselves with far too much to do after conceding two sloppy goals before Aune Heggebo bagged a late consolation goal.

The jury was out on the team selection before the game - and after the game fan debate raged over whether Mason got it wrong, and what he could do better or differently.

That is the case after the defeat - it is common place and it is true, the game and the manner of it threw up some interesting talking and selection points.

What was clear is that Albion didn't really have a mountain of clear cut chances - it seems such a long time since they have been in that situation, well before Mason's time.

But for me there is a potential and slight brave change Mason could look at that may solve one issue, and other smaller issues around it.

Heggebo did bag his first goal but chances for the big man have been in short supply in the opening few games of the season. A lot of that has been down to the fact that he has dropped deep to link play and get Albion moving.

It is something he has done very well but it has come with a sacrifice. That sacrifice is not being in the box all the time when Albion are entering that final third area.

His hold up play his superb and it isn't something Albion want to lose, but their may be a world where they don't have to lose it but can gain too.

With Josh Maja now fit to start games - it could well be that Mason goes with the bold move that not many modern day managers do, and plays two strikers.

It is an option. Maja could be that front man, fox in the box like we saw last season, allowing Heggebo to do his work without the pressure of being the goalscorer.

Equally, they could switch because Maja can do that link role too.

What happens then elsewhere? Isaac Price has shown he is more than competent out on the left. He has the pace, something Albion lacked in the first period at Boro last week, and the creative quality to still make things happen.

It is clear that Albion need to be scoring more, need to be more potent, and this tweak to the line-up could may well provide that.
