Barrow boss Andy Whing has been nominated for the League Two manager of the month award for March ahead of Walsall's trip to Holker Street tomorrow.

Whing left Solihull Moors to join the Bluebirds on January 20 and has collected seven wins from his first 16 games at the helm - including three wins and two draws from six games last month.

The Cumbria outfit started April with a 1-1 home draw against Salford City before easing to a 3-0 victory at strugglers MK Dons last weekend.

Chesterfield chief Paul Cook, Colchester United boss Danny Cowley and Tranmere Rovers caretaker manager Andy Crosby are also on the shortlist.

Barrow have developed a strong track record against League Two promotion contenders: beating Port Vale 4-0 at Holker Street and 1-0 at Vale Park, Notts County 2-1 at Meadow Lane, as well as drawing home and away against Bradford City.

Whing is a lifelong friend of Walsall boss Mat Sadler, with the pair having gone to Cockshut Hill School in Yardley together, before embarking on footballing careers in the professional game.

The Bluebirds only really have pride to play for, with League Two safety secured and a play-off push virtually impossible, albeit not mathematically just yet.

Regardless, Whing will be looking to build momentum heading into next season following his promising start to life at Holker Street.

On the injury front, defenders Sam Barnes and Theo Vassell started in a 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers B in the Lancashire Cup on Wednesday after recovering from injuries.

Elsewhere, MJ Williams has missed the past two games with an unknown injury while midfielder Kian Spence and Blackburn Rovers loanee Leo Duru have been ruled out for the rest of the season.
