Aston Villa sweat on midfielder after latest injury setback

Villa are sweating on the fitness of Amadou Onana after the midfielder was forced off in Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat at Arsenal.

The Belgium international received treatment in the first half before being replaced at half-time as Villa’s club record-equalling 11-match winning run was brought to an abrupt halt by the Premier League leaders.

Boss Unai Emery remained unsure as to the nature of Onana’s injury after the final whistle and the 24-year-old is now being assessed as Villa turn their attention toward Saturday’s visit of Nottingham Forest.

Onana had been among Villa’s best performers in the first half at the Emirates and Emery pointed to his exit as a key turning point with Arsenal scoring four goals in the second half to run away with the victory.

The £50million club record signing from Everton has enjoyed an impressive season but niggling injuries have remained a concern.

Onana, who was limited to just 20 Premier League starts in his first season at the club, missed more than a month earlier in the campaign with a hamstring injury.

On the positive side, Villa will welcome back both Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara for the visit of Forest after they both served one-match suspensions against the Gunners.

Defenders Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings are also nearing a return, though midfielder Ross Barkley is a more long-term absentee.
