Aston Villa player ratings: Skipper shines in Carabao Cup win
We rate the players after Villa make it past Coventry in the third round.
MARCO BIZOT
Beaten by a great free-kick from Victor Torp. Subbed off at the break after complaining of back pain.
Subbed 6
AARON WAN-BISSAKA
An improvement on his last two outings. Solid defensively and got up and down the wing well. Strong in the tackle.
Robust 7
TAYLOR HARWOOD-BELLIS
Grew into the game and enjoyed a pretty solid debut. Probably should have scored with a first half header. Good in the air.
Headers 7
TYRONE MINGS
A couple of awkward moments aside this was a good showing. Quick to snuff out danger more than once.
Alert 7
MATTEO RUGGERI
An encouraging full debut from the Italian. Might have scored with an early chance and was strong defensively.
Promising 7
ROSS BARKLEY
Scored but was also responsible for giving away the free-kick which led to Coventry’s goal. Some very good, some very bad.
Mixed 6
LAMARE BOGARDE
There were times when he got an important foot-in to break-up play but just like Barkley he was far too wasteful in possession.
Slack 6
IBRAHIM MBAYE
His potential is obvious and his pace is the kind which will frighten defenders. Could have made more of some situations but set up a goal.
Quick 7
JOHN MCGINN
Villa’s star man. Always in the right place when the team needed him and used the ball well. A rock to rebuild on.
Busy 8
GEORGE HEMMINGS
A rebound performance from the youngster after a difficult time against Forest. Lovely pass to set up Abraham’s opener.
Pass 7
TAMMY ABRAHAM
There’s no better way to answer the critics than with a couple of goals. Much more energy to this performance. Needs to keep it up.
Double 7
SUBSTITUTES
Zion Suzuki 7 (for Bizot, HT), Emi Buendia 6 (for McGinn, 64), Johan Manzambi 7 (for Mbaye, 64), Nicolas Jackson 6 (for Abraham, 69), Alysson (for Hemmings, 79) Subs not used: Cash, Lindelof, Kamara, Garnacho.
