Aston Villa player ratings: Defender imperious in Newcastle win

We rate the players after Villa grab a big win in Newcastle.

ZION SUZUKI

Had just one big save to make and made it superbly. Showed great handling. Has a confidence which spreads through the team.

Save 7

MATTY CASH

Hit the side netting in the first half as he got forward at will. Showed great discipline and grit to frustrate Barnes.

Strong 7

VICTOR LINDELOF

It is difficult to recall a cross from the left wing which didn't end up on his boot or head. An imperious performance.

Dominant 8

TYRONE MINGS

Played well at centre-back and then as an emergency left-back following Wan-Bissaka's injury. Won plenty of headers.

Steady 7

AARON WAN-BISSAKA

Was enjoying a decent game before being forced off with injury. Another headache for Unai Emery.

Injured 7

JOAO GOMES

Claimed an assist with a great cross for the goal. Got through plenty of work in the middle. Used the ball well.

Busy 7

BOUBACAR KAMARA

His best performance of the season. Always in the right place to sniff out danger and showed some savvy to win free-kicks as the clock ticked down.

Bright 7

ALYSSON

Created a big chance for Jackson with his pace. But also picked up a daft booking for a dive and was subbed at the break.

Booked 5

JOHAN MANZAMBI

Grabbed the headlines, as you suspected he might. Showed Newcastle exactly what they missed out on in the first half. Faded in the second.

Classy 7

EMI BUENDIA

Came close to making it two with a deflected shot. Got through loads of work and kept going, even if this wasn't his greatest performance.

Dogged 6

NICOLAS JACKSON

Should have scored his first chance, then couldn’t get his legs in order for another. But led the line really well and played his part.

Leader 7

SUBSTITUTES

John McGinn 7 (for Alysson, HT), Ross Barkley 7 (for Gomes, 72), Leon Goretzka 6 (for Buendia, 72), Ibrahim Mbaye 6 (for Manzambi, 72), Pau Torres (for Wan-Bissaka, 77) Subs not used: Bogarde, Harwood-Bellis, Madjo, Bizot (gk).
