Aston Villa defender expected to miss extended period with injury

Villa expect to be without Tyrone Mings for an extended period with the hamstring injury he suffered in Saturday’s defeat at Liverpool.

The centre-back will miss at least a month and likely longer after pulling up in stoppage time at Anfield.

Mings, making only his second appearance since returning from an ankle injury, had been introduced by boss Unai Emery as a 75th minute substitute but failed to complete the match.

His absence leaves Emery with just three senior centre-backs heading toward a hectic part of the season, with Villa set to play five matches in 14 days on the other side of the November international break.

Deadline day signing Victor Lindelof is poised to make just his second start for the club in Thursday’s Europa League tie with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Mings, who signed a new two-year contract in the summer, began the campaign as Emery’s first-choice on the left side of central defence before suffering an ankle injury in the first half of September’s 3-1 win over Fulham.

The 32-year-old would likely have started against Tel Aviv if fit, with Pau Torres now expected to continue on that side of the defence.

Villa head into Thursday’s Europa League match aiming to bounce back from last month’s 2-1 defeat at Go Ahead Eagles.

Emery’s men, who won their first two games in the competition, sit 10th in the table and are targeting a top-eight finish which would put them straight through to the last-16, avoiding the play-off round.
