Aston Villa 2 Leicester City 1: Player ratings
We rate the players after Villa started 2025 with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Emi Martinez
Ensured he did not concede the first shot on target by saving impressively from Jamie Vardy, only for Mavididi to tuck in the rebound. Handling composed as ever.
Beaten 7
Matty Cash
Back in the team after suspension. Had the first effort on target of the match in first half stoppage time. Tried to block the leveller on the line.
Solid 6
Ezri Konsa
Beaten to the cross by Vardy in the build-up to Leicester’s equaliser. Still looks far more at home in the centre of defence than on the flank.
Steady 6
Tyrone Mings
Just a second Premier League start since returning from long-term injury and a pretty solid performance. Sold well short by Watkins in the build-up to the leveller.
Secure 6
Lucas Digne
Found James Justin quite a tough nut to crack and there were only a handful of times he seemed to be in space. Strong defensively.
Subdued 6
Boubacar Kamara
Another fine game from the midfielder who did a good job of protecting Villa’s back four and dictated much of the play.
Star man 8
Ross Barkley
Finally added the quality the game was crying out for with an excellent low finish from outside the box. Got Villa moving.
Goal 7
Leon Bailey
Finally got off the mark for the season by bagging the winner and confidence quickly seemed to flow back. Almost netted again.
Breakthrough 6
Youri Tielemans
Didn’t find a huge amount of space in the first half but got better as the match wore on. A bigger influence from deep.
Improved 6
John McGinn
An afternoon the skipper would have wanted to take by the scruff of the neck but within 20 minutes he was off the pitch.
N/A
Ollie Watkins
Sold Mings short with a pass which allowed Leicester to counter and equalise. Missed a virtually open goal from five yards out.
Forgettable 5
Substitutes
Jacob Ramsey 6 (for McGinn, 19), Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 76) Emi Buendia (for Barkley, 76) Subs not used: Nedeljkovic, Onana, Bogarde, Swinkels, Jimoh, Olsen (gk).
