Aston Villa 1 Newcastle United 3: Player ratings

We rate the players after Aston Villa exited the FA Cup with a 3-1 home defeat to Newcastle.

MARCO BIZOT

Along with Lindelof the keeper was Villa’s best signing of last summer but his colossal blunder here turned the tide of the match.

Nightmare: 4

LAMARE BOGARDE

Did a decent job against Newcastle’s wingers but should have done better with a defensive header for the second goal, then lost the ball for the third.

Sloppy: 5

VICTOR LINDELOF

Probably Villa’s best player on the pitch and one of the few who seemed to be showing any leadership. Another strong performance.

Dogged: 7

PAU TORRES

Some key interceptions as Villa aimed to soak up the pressure in the second half. Ultimately the task proved beyond them.

Overrun: 6

LUCAS DIGNE

Not exactly a captain’s performance from the man handed the armband for the day. Might have been sent-off, should have conceded a penalty.

Poor: 4

DOUGLAS LUIZ

Delightful, disguised chip for the Villa goal. Sent another shot whistling over the bar but was unable to maintain the tempo in the second half.

Faded: 6

AMADOU ONANA

Started the game where he left off at Newcastle last month. A decent individual performance but was ultimately left with too much to do.

Battled: 6

LEON BAILEY

Lively but his decision-making in the final third turned out to be a precursor for his dreadful mistake on the stroke of half-time. Subbed straight after.

Error: 5

ROSS BARKLEY

Showed some flashes of form and won the free-kick which led to the goal. Didn’t dictate the tempo in the way he would have wanted.

Moments: 5

MORGAN ROGERS

Another player who performed in fits and spurts. Moved up front after the sending-off but struggled to hold the ball up and make an impact.

Quiet: 5

TAMMY ABRAHAM

The obvious positive from a largely miserable night. Got off the mark in his second spell at the club and impressed with his link-up play.

Goal: 7

SUBSTITUTES

Emi Martinez 5 (for Bailey, 45+4), Emi Buendia 5 (for Barkley, 65), Ollie Watkins 5 (for Abraham, 65), Jadon Sancho (for Luiz, 78), Ian Maatsen, (for Rogers, 78) Subs not used: Konsa, Mings, Kone, Garcia.
