Aston Villa 0 Everton 1: Player ratings
We rate the players after Villa are beaten 1-0 at home by Everton.
EMI MARTINEZ
Another error in a season where there have been rather too many of them. Just nowhere near as dependable as he used to be.
Mistake: 5
MATTY CASH
Delivered the cross from which Youri Tielemans sent a header wide and actually did a decent job of keeping Grealish quiet.
Cross: 6
EZRI KONSA
Assured as usual in defence but will have been disappointed with some of his passing in the first half. Kept working hard.
Blameless: 6
PAU TORRES
The slippy playing surface meant this could always be a match decided by a mistake and the Spanish defender, together with Martinez, was the man to make it.
Blunder: 5
IAN MAATSEN
Provided a threat in the final third and set Rogers up for a shot blocked by O’Brien. Some of his passing was a little erratic, though he was not the only one.
Pace: 6
LAMARE BOGARDE
This wasn’t a bad performance but it was telling Villa lacked their usual control in midfield without Boubacar Kamara.
Solid: 6
YOURI TIELEMANS
Would have had a couple of assists on another day but Villa were unable to take their chances. Even he lost his composure during a fraught finish.
Standout: 7
JOHN MCGINN
Looked up for it, as usual, before being forced off. Another big injury concern for Villa.
N/A
MORGAN ROGERS
Tested Pickford twice, the second producing a fine save. Saw another effort blocked by O’Brien but this was a day he could not find the finish.
Chances: 6
EMI BUENDIA
Struggled to back up his excellent performance at Tottenham the previous week. Too often slack in his passing. A frustrating day.
Slack: 5
OLLIE WATKINS
If Watkins is going to continue as Villa’s only striker they are going to need more than this. Never out of the game but never quite in it, either.
Frustrated: 5
SUBSTITUTES
Evann Guessand 5 (for McGinn, 18), Lucas Digne 6 (for Maatsen, 73), George Hemmings 6 (for Bogarde, 73) Subs not used: Lindelof, Mings, Garcia, Jimoh-Aloba, Wright (gk), Bizot (gk).
