"Another step forward" - Rob Edwards gives his verdict on Wolves' draw with Newcastle
Rob Edwards believes Wolves took 'another step forward' as they went five unbeaten with a draw against Newcastle.
Neither side could force a breakthrough in an entertaining goalless draw at Molineux, as Wolves continued their strong start to 2026.
Although they are still expected to be relegated this season, Edwards was pleased with how his players approached a tricky clash with the Magpies and feels they are continuing to progress in the right direction.
"I think the quality of the team that we're up against, the quality of the players that they've got, it was a really solid, spirited performance," Edwards said.
"I would have loved us to carry a little bit more threat, but the way the game went, it was difficult to catch them on the counter and obviously with a set-piece.
"We didn't really get the chance to get control of the game with the ball as high up as we wanted and then ask as many questions as we would have wanted in certain areas of the pitch. We weren't able to get behind them.
"But overall, I'm really pleased with that. It's another step forward, it's a clean sheet against the top team. It's a couple of clean sheets in a row in the league.
"We are looking solid, there's no doubt about that. It is another step forward for us from the position that we're in."
Wolves were defensively solid and had some moments going forward, while they also restricted Newcastle to few opportunities.
Edwards believes his side found the right balance as they earned another point.
"We tried to keep the game without the ball where we wanted it," he added.
"We knew Newcastle and knew they were going to have more of the ball with how they play and obviously with us at the moment, with our shape.
"It was always going to be difficult to control them higher up and open up too much space, especially with the power in the legs that they've got on that top line.
"So we had to be, from a certain position, from a compact shape, then we wanted to try and be aggressive. That's always the case, we always want to try and do that.
"We had to adjust one or two things quite early in the first half but after that we controlled it pretty well without the ball and limited them to very, very little."
