Manchester United v Wolves preview: Rob Edwards facing a midfield dilemma

Wolves are facing a midfield selection dilemma as they prepare to take on Manchester United.

The club's final match of 2025 will see them travel to Old Trafford winless in 18 Premier League games this season, bottom of the Premier League and facing the prospect of relegation.

A good second half performance at Liverpool was not enough to salvage any points at the weekend and Wolves must now face United without midfielder Andre.

The Brazilian picked up his fifth yellow card of the season at Anfield within the opening 19 games, which means he must face a one-match suspension.

Matt Doherty is also one more booking away from a suspension and needs to get through the United game unscathed to avoid a ban.

Head coach Rob Edwards said: "I thought in the second half he was excellent. That's his level and told him that after the game. He was aggressive, he was brave.

"He will be a big miss for us.

"He's a really good player and when he plays like that, especially that second half, that's where we need him.

"We'll have to see what we're able to do.

"We're going to have to try and find a way against every team to try and find a way to win points, which we're not quite doing at the moment."

Edwards added: "If we're going to get anything, we need him to be at that level. When he's playing with that emotion as well, then maybe he's close to getting something.

"He won the duel just before that and he was just half a millisecond late on it. I think it was the right decision, but I can't tell him to pull out of things.

"Lads have obviously got to play with their heads.

"If they get booked for a tackle, then I can deal with it. If it's for dissent or kicking a ball away or something stupid, then I won't be happy."

Wolves already have Emmanuel Agbadou, Toti Gomes, Rodrigo Gomes, Marshall Munetsi, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Tawanda Chirewa unavailable due to a combination of injuries and international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

They are very light on numbers and now only have Joao Gomes available as a recognised midfielder.

Ladislav Krejci has played there this season, however, and is likely to be the only other option for Edwards.

When asked if Krejci is the solution, Edwards was coy.

"We'll see, I'll have to think about it, obviously, can't give too much away right now," he said.

“I'll have to see what the fitness in the group is.

"Yerson (Mosquera) was feeling it, I think it was cramp, so hopefully he'll be OK. Santi (Bueno) took a knock as well.

"So maybe Krejci is forced to play at the back and we'll have to find another solution.

"We'll have to see how everyone rocks up."

This match comes just three weeks after Wolves hosted United at Molineux, in a damaging 4-1 defeat.

When asked if he can take anything from that game, Edwards said: "Certainly we can.

"That was a night that we were able to learn a lot about ourselves. We made some mistakes that sped their attacks up and sped the game up for them.

"When their players had confidence, we almost made the decisions for them and they opened us up too many times. We'll be able to learn from some of those bits.

"They were forced into changes in a different tactical way (against Newcastle). A couple of our staff were there watching the game live and we were able to watch it whilst we were having dinner.

"We'll see how we are with our numbers and suspensions and people away and injuries and stuff like that and see what we're able to go with.

"It's quite a tough three days, Anfield and Old Trafford, but we'll certainly be able to learn bits from that game."
