Dave Edwards: Some positive signs but Wolves must improve up front
It wasn't the start that Rob Edwards would've hoped for as Wolves head coach.
There were lots of positive signs from the way the players approached the game, how organised they looked and how much spirit they showed, but unfortunately that wasn't enough to try and beat a very good Crystal Palace team.
It was interesting to see the line-up when it came out with Tolu Arokodare and Jorgen Strand Larsen starting up front and I was glad to see that they could go more direct.
I thought we might play more of a 3-5-2 but Marshall Munetsi was really playing two roles, playing off the left-hand side out of possession in particular, tracking Daniel Munoz back who's such a big threat for Crystal Palace down that right hand side.
He did a good job defensively and he also tucked in to help his midfield as well, meaning he got through a lot of leg work.
Wolves needed to keep it at 0-0 for as long as possible and take Palace late into the game before trying to nick a goal and it was strange that during Wolves' best spell of the game it was Palace that scored.
That was a common theme in the game, when Wolves did have an attack and a little bit of momentum, Palace were so dangerous on the turnover of possession.
Adam Wharton was pulling the strings and some of his passing was excellent and that's where the big difference was.
Wolves had chances to take the lead but they lacked the quality of Palace, who had a lot more conviction.
I thought Andre and Joao Gomes were both terrific in the middle of the pitch and Andre's ball retention was particularly excellent. He was the one player that I felt could handle the ball for Wolves and calm the game down.
Away from that Wolves really lacked quality at the top end of the pitch and that's where Rob Edwards is going to have to try and find a way to to score goals and to relieve pressure.
Wolves' best moments came from bulldozing their way through on the second ball but if you don't take one of those chances, it's always going to be difficult when you work that hard and use up that much energy and concentration.
It's a lack of quality at the top end of the pitch that really hurts Wolves and also the lack of pace. We didn't have someone to take a moment on the ball and pick a forward pass, or someone with raw pace to take the game away from the opposition.
We did look more organised at the back and Emmanuel Agbadou was a lot calmer. Edwards will get this team right defensively, but it's the forward areas where we will need to improve.
It's easier to attract players in January if we're still in the mix, so we need to pick up points before the window opens.
But there were enough positives in this performance to show there will be some fight in this team.
