However, they did take the lead thanks to a piece of individual brilliance from Mikey Johnston in the first period.

Colby Bishop headed Pompey level in the second - before Albion saw a strong penalty shout turned down before Regan Poole survived a certain second yellow card when pulling back Aune Heggebo.

The decision left Ryan Mason that incensed as he was sent off for his protests to the fourth official.

Albion had spells where they did look dangerous, but overall they struggled to get into a real rhythm as they looked to try and dominate the game.

They had Pompey on the back foot probably more than the visitors did to Albion - but it just seemed that consistently Albion were struggling to build from the back.

The ball retention in the first half was poor and a lot of it was down to the fact Portsmouth set up well to combat Albion being able to dominate the ball.

Every time playing from the back Pompey put a squeeze on them and they struggled to adapt. They stifled Albion basically and it worked for them.

Price snuffed out

Everything has been about the Albion star man in recent weeks - but he had arguably one of his quietest games in an Albion shirt.

He did produce a few smart passes and set Albion on their way at certain points - but he was largely ineffective throughout the game.

When he did find space to get on the ball, Pompey were on to him and he was unable to have an influence as he has done in recent weeks.

It was not surprising really that Pompey targeted Price - and it will continue to happen because side's have identified him as a threat.

The task now is to combat it.

Heggebo really is The Hulk

The big Albion forward picked up the nickname The Hulk back in his homeland.

And you can see why.

Again he was superb leading the line for Albion. He gave the Pompey defenders the absolute run around, holding it up, laying it up, driving forward and dragging Albion up the field.

He was clean through on goal when he was hauled back by Poole, who should have been sent off.

But he is such a handful and looks to be yet another superb buy from Abion - he really does.

He should have had a first league goal in the second half before the defender took the ball off his toe - as Albion went up for a big penalty shout.

But he gives Albion so much. Add goals to his game and he is going to be some striker.
