The experienced 34-year-old has been recruited to provide cover and competition for Emi Martinez, following the departure of Robin Olsen at the end of last season.

Bizot, a product of Ajax’s academy, has more than 400 senior appearances under his belt and played in the Champions League for Brest last season.

Villa were always on the lookout for a goalkeeper this summer after Olsen’s exit, following the expiry of his contract.

The future of No.1 Martinez has been the subject of speculation since he left the pitch in tears after the final home match of last season.

But Villa are yet to receive any formal approaches for the Argentina international, who returned to training earlier this week ahead of the new campaign.

Bizot, who has one senior Netherlands cap, is the club’s second signing of the transfer window after teenage forward Zepiqueno Redmond.

"It's an absolutely amazing feeling," said Bizot. "I am a little bit blown away by the professionalism of the club and the effort everybody put into it.

"I am really proud to be here. It's an amazing club, a big club and it is always a dream to be at the highest level possible.

"I hope I can do everything to work hard and help the team in every possible way."
