Aston Villa close in on goalkeeper signing

Villa are closing in on the signing of goalkeeper Marco Bizot from Brest.

The Dutch shot-stopper has emerged as a serious target for Unai Emery and a deal is on course to be completed in the coming days.

Villa have been on the lookout for an experienced goalkeeper after Robin Olsen’s departure at the end of last season and Bizot, who played in the Champions League last season, has been heavily scouted.

The 34-year–old, who began his career at Groningen, has more than 400 senior appearances under his belt having also played for Genk and AZ Alkmaar before joining Brest four years ago.

His signing would further increase speculation over the future of Villa’s current No.1, Emi Martinez, despite the fact recruiting a goalkeeper has always been on the club’s agenda this summer, with Bizot being brought in primarily as back-up to the Argentina international.

Martinez left the pitch in tears after the final home match of last season but while the 32-year–old is thought to be keen on a fresh challenge - and Villa willing to sell for the right price - no formal approaches have been made.

Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are among the clubs to have been linked with the World Cup winner but both would need to sell their current goalkeepers before making a move.

Martinez is due to report back for pre-season training at Villa next week, along with the bulk of Emery’s squad.
